Caminos de Esperanza Cultural Center & the Peace Center of United University Church Hold Story Circle in Los Angeles

Our May 16th story circle in Los Angeles (held at United University Church) was small but powerful. Since everyone in the United States is an immigrant or descended from immigrants except for native American Indians, participants shared stories focused on immigration to the United States. In some cases stories centered around participants’ ancestral origins in Europe or their diverse blended families in the U.S.; in other cases, participants shared powerful stories of forced migration to the U.S. during El Salvador’s bloody civil war in the 1980s. Stories were videotaped, and Caminos de Esperanza Cultural Center will be maintaining a library collection of immigration stories. We expect to do more story circles on a regular basis, and look forward to next year’s international event!

60 pessoas, entre crianças e adultos, participaram do evento, no qual além da contação de histórias ocorreu uma dramatização e apresentação de objetos etnográficos e arqueológicos.

Center for Digital Storytelling Int’l Day Celebration Rocks Berkeley

The International Day event in Berkeley grew so large that we almost ran out of seats!

Nearly 100 folks showed up at the Berkeley Public Library to hear stories from Ericka Huggins, to learn about the amazing work of the Global Lives Project, enjoy spoken word by Marquita Jones, savor music by Corina Peila, Do D.A.T., and witness a slammin’ finale by CDS’ very own resident rock star Theresa Perez.

Sad you missed out? Get the next best thing by visiting our photo collection from the evening on Flickr.

Bon Fire in Oxford to celebrate the International Day!

On May 16 the UWC society at Oxford has gathered together with 35 between enthusiastic citizens and students… People gathered together in an intimate stories circle, around a bone fire in port Meadows, Oxford, (in spite the rainy whether!). An opportunity for many to meet each other, an opportunity for some that did not have a shelter to spend an enjoyable evening and sharing their amazing experiences.  An opportunity for students to get to know different realities of the city they live in;an opportunity for some children to be introduced to the value of life experiences;an opportunity to sing together about the importance of freedom in life and to keep up the sun shining inside and outside!

Thank you for everyone that joined this day cross-nationally and those that inspired this event in the first place!

Patient Voices Pilgrim Projects shared stories and music in Cambridge

About 20 people went to the event during the course of the afternoon
and evening. They held a story circle, in which people told stories about
miracles and marvels, and we read out stories that had been sent by people
who were unable to be with us in person

They had a loop of stories showing in one room, and later in the evening, they
had stories in music, played by Paul Connelly, who has written the music for
many of the Patient Voices stories.

Storytelling brings community together in Washington DC

Storyteller Claire Nelson, Lilo & Ramon Gonzalez

Our International Day of Sharing Life Stories celebration Pulling a 180: Stories about Change, Transformation, and New Beginnings drew an ethusiastic audience. We were able to capture some images using Elane’s cool iPhone. Lilo & Ramon Gonzalez sang and played guitar and Lilo told about his experience as an undocumented immigrant in the U.S. SpeakeasyDC organized live storytelling which included Toni Ford’s wonderful story about her audacious aunties. Claire Nelson told the inspiring and funny story about how she almost ended up being the prime minister of Jamaica, and Robert Egger captivated the audience with the story of his “u-turn” from nightclub mogul to creating the DC Central Kitchen where surplus food from the restaurant industry is recycled into meals by homeless men and women who are trained in culinary skills. Teenagers from the Served Project impressed everyone with their short digital films. Brittney’s story “Grey” was an eloquent exploration of the racial issues that surrounded her close friendship with a white girl while growing up. Amauta’s film told the story of how a little fish changed his life forever. Kelly’s very artistic film told of her struggle to be less of a perfectionist, and Luis’s film “On the Bridge” told the moving story of the night he was thrown out of the house by his dad and left homeless at age 14. Everyone was blown away by these powerful and amazing films. Stephanie Garibaldi from SpeakeasyDC hosted the event and told her own great story of overcoming shyness.

We also created a “Story Wall” where people could write their stories about change and transformation. Some quotes from our storywall:

“I started hugging people more. And I found that good people exist.”

“Blue eyes was what I wanted as I child. I thought I found them, but it was only a turn.”

“We’re moving to Guatemala! We feel like maybe we’re in a cocoon. What will we be like after next year?”

It was wonderful to connect with each other through our stories. Thanks to AmyS, AmyH, Eva, Nina, Jessica, Gayle, Brian, LianeR, Andrew, Elane, Duane, Speakeasy DC, The Served Project, the Center for Digital Storytelling, and everyone who offered a helping hand and came out to celebrate with us. We’re looking forward to doing it again!
